In a world that moves faster every day, where a few stay in the same role for even a decade, this man's extraordinary commitment stands as a testament to loyalty, care, and quiet heroism. This year, the Fort Yates Public School District proudly celebrates Mr. Larry Silbernagel, who marks his 50th year of service as a school bus driver.

For half a century, Mr. Silbernagel has been more than just a driver. He's been a guardian of early morning routines, a source of calm in the morning rush, and a familiar, comforting face for generations of students and staff. Heโ€™s also been the source of the history of our district. Rain or shine, snow or fog, he has faithfully navigated his routeโ€”always early, always with a smile.

โ€œLarry was driving when I was a student at FYPS back in the late eighties,โ€ said Kim Whitebull. the current superintendent. โ€œI bet he can remembers almost all the names and faces of the kids and their parents. Larry treats each child with kindness and respect.โ€ One time a community member came to obtain proof of a diploma from the 90โ€™s, as staff searched through old records, Larry was asked and he named the year the student graduated and he was spot on.

Over his 50-year career, Mr. Silbernagel has logged thousands of miles and transported thousands of students safely to and from school. Yet, when Ms. Whitebull asked him last year if retirement

was in his near future he said his goal was to make his 50 year mark and on May 15, 2025 he did just that. School staff describe him as dependable and helpful and an icon filled with the schoolโ€™s history.

To commemorate his remarkable milestone, the Fort Yates Public School District hosted a steak dinner celebration at the school with staff and his son Casey. He was presented with a star quilt, one of the highest honors of the D/Lakota people. Board member Virgil Tiokasin shared memories of Larryโ€™s family and some Fort Yates history.

The school board will also be presenting Mr. Silbernagel with a plaque honoring his service.

Thank you, Mr. Larry Silbernagel, for 50 years of dedication, care, and unwavering service to the Fort Yates Public School District. Youโ€™ve made a differenceโ€”mile by mile, student by student, year after year. Larry will begin year 51 in the 2025-2026 school year.
