Fort Yates Public School warmly invites families, community members, Tribal leaders, school board members, and alumni to celebrate the unveiling of a permanent art installation created by our students in collaboration with renowned Indigenous artist Kathy Whitman (Elk Woman).

This special project honors our connection to the land, culture, creativity, and community, with each student contributing a lasting piece of art to our school.

Kathy Whitman (Elk Woman) is an internationally recognized multidisciplinary artist from the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation of the Fort Berthold Reservation in North Dakota. Her work includes sculpture, painting, jewelry, fashion, and furniture design. She has received numerous prestigious awards and exhibited her artwork throughout the United States and internationally.

Inspired by her Indigenous culture, family, and deep connection to Mother Earth, Kathy transforms natural, found, and recycled materials into meaningful works of art. Through her creativity, she strives to promote environmental stewardship, cultural appreciation, and unity. As an artist and educator, she encourages others to explore their creativity, push boundaries, and recognize the beauty and possibilities in the world around them.
